Cathy Reiser, a home health aide from Plainfield, recently won $100 through SaveYourRefund, an incentive-based promotion that encourages income tax filers to save a portion of their refund.

Reiser completed her taxes with help from CAP Services, which provides free tax preparation assistance for income-eligible individuals and families in Portage, Waupaca and Waushara counties and is a SaveYourRefund partner. When Reiser’s tax preparers said she could win money by saving a portion of her refund, she decided to give it a shot. Through the SaveYourRefund program, tax filers over the age of 18 who save a portion of their tax refund can enter a promotion for a chance to win 100 weekly $100 prizes and the grand prize of $25,000. By encouraging saving, the program aims to help families avoid personal financial crisis caused by unforeseen expenses. Reiser told SaveYourRefund she plans to use her $100 SaveYourRefund prize to start a new car fund. “I’m just going to keep

[the prize] in the bank and try to keep adding to it until I have enough to get a better car,” she said. People can learn more about Reiser and other winners at CAP’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helps individuals and families maximize their tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation and inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify, such as the Child Tax Credit, Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled, and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
