Local Partners Organize Resources for Enrollment in Health Care Exchanges

//Local Partners Organize Resources for Enrollment in Health Care Exchanges

A group of local organizations and volunteers are working together to help educate those who may be eligible for the new health care exchanges made available under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Partners include the Bridge Community Clinic in Wausau, Portage County Health and Human Services, Mid-State Technical College, the Portage County Public Library, Farmer’s Union and CAP Services.

“While there continue to be problems with the on-line application, it is important that people learn about the factors to consider when purchasing a plan,” said Jenny Christl, AmeriCorps Member at Bridge Community Health Clinic. “Developing that understanding will help prepare people for enrollment that can be done on-line, by phone or by paper.”

Informational sessions on the exchanges will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the Lettie Jensen Community Center, 487 N. Main St., Amherst; and from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, at the Charles M. White branch of the Portage County Public Library, 1001 Main St., Stevens Point. Additional informational sessions may also be scheduled in Rosholt and Almond.

Additionally, Mid-State Technical College at 933 Michigan Ave., Stevens Point, will host enrollment assistance sessions in Computer Room 138 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays from November 7 through December 19, with the exception of Thanksgiving. Three Certified Assistance Counselors, or CACs, will provide assistance to those wishing to enroll (either on-line or by paper submission).

Enrollment sessions generally take between 30 and 40 minutes. People will need to bring a photo ID, and a social security card (for all family members who are applying for coverage). It is helpful to have their W-2 form from the previous year.

CAP Services and Portage County Health and Human Services also plan to host some daytime enrollment sessions with CACs at Stevens Point locations. Dates and times are yet to be determined.
