Homeless count will take place in Portage County Jan. 29

//Homeless count will take place in Portage County Jan. 29

CAP Services will be conducting a street count of individuals experiencing homelessness in Portage County the night of January 29, 2014.

CAP Services staff and volunteers will begin the count at around 9 p.m. For more information about the count or how to volunteer, contact Melissa Randall, CAP Services Domestic Abuse Outreach Coordinator, at 715-343-7127.

The count is part of the 2014 Point-In-Time Count coordinated by the Wisconsin Balance of State Continuum of Care as required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  The Point-in-Time Count is conducted in the state of Wisconsin twice each year – in January and July – to show a snap shot of homelessness in the state.

The Point-in-Time count from July 2013 found a total of 50 individuals – including 17 children – experiencing homelessness in Portage County. This count included homeless shelters and people living in an unsheltered location such as a car, a park or a tent. The count did not include individuals staying with friends or family, as this does not meet HUD’s definition of homelessness.
