Spend a day in someone else’s shoes. Together, CAP Services, Portage County Business Council’s Leadership Portage County, and the League of Women Voters of the Stevens Point area will host a public poverty simulation on Thursday, November 15 at the Lettie Jensen Center in Amherst. The community is invited to participate in the simulation. No past experience or participation is necessary.

Poverty simulations are an opportunity for individuals to obtain first-hand knowledge of many of the situations and decisions experienced by low-income households. The experience involves participants assuming a role in a family (Ex: grandparent raising grandchildren, single parent, two-parent household, etc.). Family units are provided with background information regarding their income and expenses and are asked to achieve goals over the “4-week” simulation experience – families will be asked to pay bills, feed children, get them to school, go to work or get a job, access community resources, etc.

This experience is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income individuals. This simulation is open to all and we are seeking both volunteers to serve as vendors/service providers, and participants to be given a family scenario.

Those interested in serving as a vendor or service provider should come to the simulation a bit early, at 1:30 PM, for instructions.
